Ashfield heart group mums say thankyou to blood donors
Members of the Patches Heart group in Kirkby get a visit from Billy Blood Drop at a special meeting at the Ashwood Centre in Kirkby today from the left are Adele Burton,Owen Burton,Rosie Wilson,Joe Wilson, Laura Wilson,Taylor Eyre,Maria Linfield,Casey-Beau Johnson and Kat Wilson
Published on Friday 16 March 2012 10:52
A GROUP of Ashfield mums whose children’s lives were saved thanks to the generosity of blood donors are urging other people to consider giving the gift of life this Mother’s Day.
Many of the children from Patches Heart Group have undergone open heart surgery as babies or toddlers, needing many units of blood and platelets - the cells that form blood clots to stop bleeding.
Now their mums are not only saying thank you to the donors, but are backing NHS Blood & Transplant ahead of Mother’s Day on Sunday to encourage people to think about becoming a blood donor.
Maria Linfield, founder of Patches, which offers support to families of children with heart problems, knows all to well about the value of blood donors.
Her daughter Casey-Beau (6) was born with congenital heart disease and has had open-heart surgery four times, needing over 18 units of blood and platelets.
She said: “The operations are a very scary and worrying time and Casey-Beau will continue to have surgery as she grows.
“I’m very grateful to those people who take the time to give blood and platelets.
“Without them, many children wouldn’t make it through surgery.”
One of the biggest uses for blood is helping mothers and babies who suffer complications during childbirth, as well as being used to help premature babies, replace blood lost during surgery and treating patients with blood diseases like leukaemia.
Taylor Eyre (5) had surgery at just 13 days old.
His mum Laura Wilson said: “I am eternally thankful to all those people who took the time to donate, these people are all lifesavers.
“I’d tell anyone who hasn’t given blood to just go along and do it. Half an hour of your time gives a child their life back forever.”
